It seemed that someone went very wide on the left hand corner as you turn onto the straight towards Saturday market. He hit the barrier, was launched into the air, then hit the ground hard. Didn't move at all for the first 30 seconds. This was actually the second crash at the same corner.
The right side of his handlebar had snapped off!
I'm sure the guys who raced will give a better account but all from VCB were looking good. An earlier crash had created two groups, the first containing Rob and Paul R.

Yes it was carnage . Four crashes in all. Dodgy riding the cause i think. Will write up an account later, away ATM.

OK, quick summary...
There was definitely a bigger field in this year's support race, which may have been a factor in all the crashes - I think last year there were only 30 or so riders, this time I think it was 50+ (do correct me if I'm wrong, observers/fellow racers, etc.)
From my perspective it was hard work and felt quick, in stark contrast to the Tockwith 3/4 race on Tuesday which felt like a club run by comparison. Perhaps I was just having a bad form day, who knows. Anyway, the jittery riding started from the off - I nearly got taken out by someone rapidly changing line on the first approach to Sow Hill corner and had some dodgy Wednesday market moments too - then on lap 3 there was a big pile-up on the left-hander on to Toll Gavel outside Wilko's, which took out three Cliff Pratt riders among others.
As I had been ignoring Liggett and Sherwen's exhortation to stay at the front end of the main field, along with others I got gapped by this crash and failed to get back in touch with the bunch over the next few laps.
Then we came round Wilko's corner again to see Richardsons' Rob Busby on the deck and immobile, apparently having ridden into the right-hand crowd barriers. After this point the race was, in effect, over because we had to ride slow through section as the paramedics did their thing (concussion and collarbone problem was the latest we'd heard). We did several laps at chaingang pace then the race was stopped, re-started for a lap or so, then stopped for good.
As we later discovered there had been further crashes in the main bunch, making about four incidents in total. Everyone finished feeling kinda cheated but glad to be alive - it was a shame for frontrunner Ben Ives that he hadn't opened a 30-second gap, which would have sealed the win for him.
Strange that it was such a demolition derby this year.
