VC Beverley announces new cyclocross race for Nov 2013

The club is proud to announce we’ll be hosting our first cyclocross race on Sunday 24th November 2013.

The race, to be held on the Dalton Estate in South Dalton, East Riding of Yorkshire, will form Round 8 of the well established Yorkshire Points Cyclocross series. There will be races for all age groups, from 8 year-olds to veterans.

VC Beverley’s treasurer Martin Smart has been instrumental in negotiating for this event, which will be the first cyclocross race to be held in East Yorkshire for many years.

New chairman and award winners at VC Beverley

Rich Cutsforth was elected chairman of Velo Club Beverley at the club AGM on 21st January 2013, replacing Paul Waddington who has stood down because of time commitments.

Rob Brown and Martin Smart remain as club secretary and treasurer respectively.

Also on the night we had winners of our two traditional club awards. “Club Rider of the Year” went to club run stalwart and ‘senior’ member David Connell, while Matt Beaumont (owner of a killer sprint), was voted “Most Improved Rider”. The new accolade of “Best turned out rider” went to Richard Vickers, who wins a tub of Rapha Winter Embrocation for looking cool on club runs and at races.

Congratulations to our award winners and new chairman!

Velo Club Beverley 2013 AGM

Our annual meeting takes place on Monday 21st January 2013 at 7pm in the Tiger Inn, Lairgate, Beverley. New members welcome. Full details on our forum.

Quick news round-up

For any website visitors wondering whether anything at all has happened since the news article announcing our summer road race winner, this post is a quick round-up of news in what is traditionally a quiet time in the world of road cycling.

Boggle Hole 2012 – our annual away weekend was the biggest ever, with 17 club members making the annual trip up to the YHA for a bit of end-of-season R&R. The new home page pic shows most of the the gathering. Ye Dolphin in Robin Hood’s Bay coped very well indeed with our insatiable demands for food and beer.

Cyclocross – there’s been plenty of the muddy stuff going on, the highlight of which was Pete F-S and Rich C both completing the 3 Peaks Challenge in its toughest edition for 30 years. Both riders got to the end despite monster mechanicals and apocalyptic weather. We’ve also had some good results in the Lincs evening league in October and one or two Yorkshire Points League events, with Ben, me and Droppy also riding. With Matt now owning a ‘crosser and Martin S looking to return to it next year, we could have 6+ active racers for the 2013 season.

Darren Bendelow wins Velo Club Beverley Summer Road Race

Clifton CC rider Bendelow took the win after a two-man break that survived almost to the finish line.

The third annual Velo Club Beverley Summer Road Race ran in fine conditions but with a stiff westerly breeze blunting attacksĀ on the long uphill drag from Walkington to High Hunsley. Despite plentiful digs off the front, the bunch stayed together for the opening few laps until Darren Bendelow and a fellow Clifton CC rider got a gap that had built to 30 seconds by the bell lap.

Further attacks within the bunch started to erode the distance to the leaders on the final ascent, and as the two Clifton riders started the fast run in from High Hunsley they had a mere 20 seconds in hand, with the bunch now chasing hard behind.

The final sharp kick up before the finish line helped the chasers reel in the two leaders, but Bendelow stayed clear and took a hard-earned win just ahead of the bunch.

Points and good performances from lots of local teams too, with a top 10 as follows:

1st Darren Bendelow, Clifton CC

2nd Paul McDonald, Slipstream

3rd Jason Livesey, Dirtwheels

4th Damian Elvington, Nathan’s Flyers

5th Mark Jacobi, Peak Road Club

6th Thomas Sutton, We Love Mountains

7th Paul Drop, Wilsons Wheels

8th John Askew, Active CP Cycles

9th Jacob Trotter, Squadra

10th Sean Newbould, Featherstone RC

Congratulations to all riders and many thanks to all VC Beverley marshals and helpers without whom we would not be able to stage the event.

Shack smashes Goodmanham Grovel time

Under provocation from 2012′s #2-ranked Grovel contender Karl Downes, Wilsons Wheels’ Dave Shackleton posted an outstanding time of 49:28 on our unofficial 19.9 mile club ‘PB’ circuit, the Goodmanham Grovel. This is now the time to beat: with an average speed of over 24 mph on this rolling circuit with 295m of climbing, Shack has set the bar uncomfortably high.

With this and Karl’s recent time, I would hazard that there’s now a useful ‘benchmark’ range on this circuit which could be summarised as follows:

Sub 52 – Cat 2 standard and above

52-54 – Cat 3

54+ Cat 4 and below

News round up including rainy EYRRL pix

Been a while since our news page has been updated but that doesn’t mean nowt has been happening…

Since the last story back in April we’ve had:

  • More record-breaking club run turnouts, with 22+ turning up
  • Some excellent road race results, which have resulted in…
  • Two more newly minted 3rd cat club members – congrats to Paul Drop and Ben Bell, riding for Wilsons
  • Some points in the Road Race League – for Matt Beaumont, Paul W and Paul Drop

Details of most of this stuff is knocking around on our forum, for any non-club member reading this.

And in the meantime, here are some pix from last weeks East Yorks Road Race League round at Etton, which was held in truly atrocious conditions but was, remarkably, quite enjoyable nonetheless. Pix courtesy of club member Nigel Laws who turned out in the pouring rain to snap pix, cheer us on and rescue punctured riders.

Quick HTRC road race report

Hey look, Paul W towing some guys up a hill! This only happened on lap 1

The annual Hull Thursday road race is always a source of fear and dread for anyone who isn’t a natural climber, on account of its six ascents of the sharp 115- metre climb out of North Newbald. It didn’t start well from my perspective, with a puncture on the way to the start, from which I was rescued by a good samaritan from Holme Valley Wheelers who gave me a lift to the village hall where track pumps awaited. Chapeau, therefore, to Holme Valley Wheelers, the home of decent folk who stop for you. And to Gary K for the track pump.

It turned out that flats were a big feature of the race, on account of the East Yorks’s usual deadly rain/flint combo, which saw many racers plodding disconsolately back to their cars along the dodgy back straight. (If they were proper hardmen they would have followed the example of Pete Fielding-Smith a couple of years ago and run to the finish in their socks). In fact I can probably ascribe a top-20 finish to the large number of riders who were punctured out of the race (and to the DNFs who fancied an early lunch).

Anyway as to the racing itself it was the usual Newbald circuit cycle – a brisk start, lots of chatting along the back straights then plenty of manoeuvring as weedier riders like me try to get to the front before the climb so they can slide back thru the bunch but still be with the group by the time the worst of the gradient is over. This worked first time out, in a hard ascent that shelled out a few riders. However on the next lap I got gapped shortly after Paul Rymer came breezing past like he was riding to the shops. Fortunately a grupetto of four riders formed and we kept the bunch tantalisingly in sight for a couple of laps, without actually getting closer. Then it was three of us, and by the penultimate lap we learned we were 21st-23rd…

When the BikePure rider in our group saw another shelled-out guy in front, he cranked up the pace to get a top 20 finish, dropping me and a Hull Thursday, so we 2-upped round the rest of the bell lap before I said goodbye on the final climb. By this time the rising number of DNFs had us 18th and 19th and that’s how it ended, probably 3 mins or so off the bunch. Very nice to be greeted by a VC Beverley crowd fresh from the club run, thanks lads!

I’ve no idea how things played out up front but big congrats to Paul R who got a superb 3rd (extra-impressive given he’s ill) with Sheffrec dominating the top positions. Droppy took 15th after sticking with the lead group for 5 out of six laps and Gary K came in shortly after me.

Goes without saying that it chucked it down properly at one point so we all looked properly Belgian at the end.

Paul Rymer makes 3rd cat by March!

Congratulations to VC Beverley member and Wilsons Wheels racer Paul Rymer, who has just had his third cat licence delivered before the season’s properly started!

Many more points are likely in 2012 and beyond from this very talented young rider, who most recently got an extremely respectable 8th in the Active/CP Cycles RR.
