Clifton CC rider Bendelow took the win after a two-man break that survived almost to the finish line.
The third annual Velo Club Beverley Summer Road Race ran in fine conditions but with a stiff westerly breeze blunting attacks on the long uphill drag from Walkington to High Hunsley. Despite plentiful digs off the front, the bunch stayed together for the opening few laps until Darren Bendelow and a fellow Clifton CC rider got a gap that had built to 30 seconds by the bell lap.
Further attacks within the bunch started to erode the distance to the leaders on the final ascent, and as the two Clifton riders started the fast run in from High Hunsley they had a mere 20 seconds in hand, with the bunch now chasing hard behind.
The final sharp kick up before the finish line helped the chasers reel in the two leaders, but Bendelow stayed clear and took a hard-earned win just ahead of the bunch.
Points and good performances from lots of local teams too, with a top 10 as follows:
1st Darren Bendelow, Clifton CC
2nd Paul McDonald, Slipstream
3rd Jason Livesey, Dirtwheels
4th Damian Elvington, Nathan’s Flyers
5th Mark Jacobi, Peak Road Club
6th Thomas Sutton, We Love Mountains
7th Paul Drop, Wilsons Wheels
8th John Askew, Active CP Cycles
9th Jacob Trotter, Squadra
10th Sean Newbould, Featherstone RC
Congratulations to all riders and many thanks to all VC Beverley marshals and helpers without whom we would not be able to stage the event.
