New Secretary and Treasurer for 2014

Last weeks AGM saw the election of a new secretary to replace Rob Brown who has stepped down from the role after a long stint doing sterling work in the position, his replacement is the equally capable Gary Trees a longstanding member of the club and no slouch on a bike either.

A new treasurer volunteered to replace Martin Smart who again has served the role well for a number of years, so Gary Knowles will turn his accounting skills to good use looking after the books when he is not bashing out the miles on his bike.

Our traditional awards were handed out according to results of a members vote for the following;

Ken Stapley Memorial ‘Club rider of the year’ is Paul Shepherd, our hope for VCB glory in all races this season.

Most improved rider went to Rich Vickers, considering he has started from a good position all that improvement must have took some hard graft. Lets see how he juggles being a new dad with all that training.

In order to help share some of the work that goes into running the club some new roles have been created, so we now have the following people helping out with specific duties,

Ian Ridsdale – Road race

Rob Brown – Club kit

Martin Smart & Rich Cutsforth – CX race

Mark Harney – Club trips

Martin Parker  – Annual Boggle Hole jolly boys outing

Dave Connell – Reliability ride

I hope everybody enjoys their new roles and that they will receive plenty of help and support from the rest of the members.

Final note 2014 subscriptions are due and are £14 please contact Gary Knowles as soon as his details appear in the contacts section.

2014 AGM

This years AGM will be held at 8:00 PM on Wednesday the 5th February, the venue is Tiger Inn, Lairgate, Beverley in the same room as last year.

All existing members are asked to attend as well as anybody interested in joining especially if you have been riding with us over the last year, please be prompt so we can get started on time.

We will need to elect a new club secretary as after many years hard work and dedication to the club Rob Brown is stepping down from the position, this is a crucial role within the club and would suit anyone with a keen interest in the clubs future and getting involved in road race organisation. The other club members positions are also up for grabs if anybody would like to take over.

Please give this some thought before the the AGM and feel free to get in touch with any of the existing members if you want to discuss what the roles involve.

Awards will be given out on the night for the coveted titles of Ken Stapley Memorial ‘Club rider of the year’ and ‘Most improved rider of the year’ Please *email or text* me your nominations as soon as possible (don’t post them on the forum or tweet them)  Email details are here: please email your nominations to me as soon as possible.

See forum for further discussion.

VC Beverley announces new cyclocross race for Nov 2013

The club is proud to announce we’ll be hosting our first cyclocross race on Sunday 24th November 2013.

The race, to be held on the Dalton Estate in South Dalton, East Riding of Yorkshire, will form Round 8 of the well established Yorkshire Points Cyclocross series. There will be races for all age groups, from 8 year-olds to veterans.

VC Beverley’s treasurer Martin Smart has been instrumental in negotiating for this event, which will be the first cyclocross race to be held in East Yorkshire for many years.

New chairman and award winners at VC Beverley

Rich Cutsforth was elected chairman of Velo Club Beverley at the club AGM on 21st January 2013, replacing Paul Waddington who has stood down because of time commitments.

Rob Brown and Martin Smart remain as club secretary and treasurer respectively.

Also on the night we had winners of our two traditional club awards. “Club Rider of the Year” went to club run stalwart and ‘senior’ member David Connell, while Matt Beaumont (owner of a killer sprint), was voted “Most Improved Rider”. The new accolade of “Best turned out rider” went to Richard Vickers, who wins a tub of Rapha Winter Embrocation for looking cool on club runs and at races.

Congratulations to our award winners and new chairman!

Velo Club Beverley 2013 AGM

Our annual meeting takes place on Monday 21st January 2013 at 7pm in the Tiger Inn, Lairgate, Beverley. New members welcome. Full details on our forum.

Quick news round-up

For any website visitors wondering whether anything at all has happened since the news article announcing our summer road race winner, this post is a quick round-up of news in what is traditionally a quiet time in the world of road cycling.

Boggle Hole 2012 – our annual away weekend was the biggest ever, with 17 club members making the annual trip up to the YHA for a bit of end-of-season R&R. The new home page pic shows most of the the gathering. Ye Dolphin in Robin Hood’s Bay coped very well indeed with our insatiable demands for food and beer.

Cyclocross – there’s been plenty of the muddy stuff going on, the highlight of which was Pete F-S and Rich C both completing the 3 Peaks Challenge in its toughest edition for 30 years. Both riders got to the end despite monster mechanicals and apocalyptic weather. We’ve also had some good results in the Lincs evening league in October and one or two Yorkshire Points League events, with Ben, me and Droppy also riding. With Matt now owning a ‘crosser and Martin S looking to return to it next year, we could have 6+ active racers for the 2013 season.

Darren Bendelow wins Velo Club Beverley Summer Road Race

Clifton CC rider Bendelow took the win after a two-man break that survived almost to the finish line.

The third annual Velo Club Beverley Summer Road Race ran in fine conditions but with a stiff westerly breeze blunting attacks on the long uphill drag from Walkington to High Hunsley. Despite plentiful digs off the front, the bunch stayed together for the opening few laps until Darren Bendelow and a fellow Clifton CC rider got a gap that had built to 30 seconds by the bell lap.

Further attacks within the bunch started to erode the distance to the leaders on the final ascent, and as the two Clifton riders started the fast run in from High Hunsley they had a mere 20 seconds in hand, with the bunch now chasing hard behind.

The final sharp kick up before the finish line helped the chasers reel in the two leaders, but Bendelow stayed clear and took a hard-earned win just ahead of the bunch.

Points and good performances from lots of local teams too, with a top 10 as follows:

1st Darren Bendelow, Clifton CC

2nd Paul McDonald, Slipstream

3rd Jason Livesey, Dirtwheels

4th Damian Elvington, Nathan’s Flyers

5th Mark Jacobi, Peak Road Club

6th Thomas Sutton, We Love Mountains

7th Paul Drop, Wilsons Wheels

8th John Askew, Active CP Cycles

9th Jacob Trotter, Squadra

10th Sean Newbould, Featherstone RC

Congratulations to all riders and many thanks to all VC Beverley marshals and helpers without whom we would not be able to stage the event.
